Maria Tamburrino

Maria Tamburrino has been the Principal flutist and frequent concerto soloist with the San Jose Symphony and the Midsummer Mozart Orchestra of San Francisco since 1979. She is continuing in that capacity with the new Symphony Silicon Valley since 2003. She has performed all of the flute concerti by Mozart in addition to concerti by Christopher Rouse, Telemann, Griffes, Stamitz, Saint-Saens, and Hanson. Her collaborations with Nicanor Zabaleta, Herman Baumann, and Julius Baker have been widely acclaimed.

Maria Tamburrino's playing has been described as "incredibly seductive, with vibrant tone and sultry persuasive inflections." Ms.Tamburrino has performed and presented master classes at the prestigious International Festival of Colmar, France in 1999. She is an adjunct faculty member at U.C. Berkeley, West Valley College and Diablo Valley College, and has been a featured artist or faculty member at Northern California Flute Camp in Carmel Valley from 1994-2005.

In addition to her CD of Debussy and Ravel in original transcriptions for flute and piano (Enchanted Garden), Maria Tamburrino's extensive recording credits include a CD for flute and guitar (Set 2), a CD for flute and harp (Moonlight), as well as film and TV soundtracks. The DVD Flute Fantasy features Maria Tamburrino playing a variety of flutes with nature images.

Born and educated in upstate New York, Ms. Tamburrino holds a Master's Degree in Education and Flute Performance from SUNY. She continued her graduate studies at Syracuse University. Her past teachers include Julius Baker, John Oberbrunner, Donald MacDonald, and Lloyd Gowen. She participated in master classes with Jean Pierre Rampal.
